According to tough-as-nails The New York Times fashion critic, Cathy Horyn, viewing resort wear collections is "practically like being on vacation." If that's true, I plan on religiously devoting myself to regular viewing sessions for each and every collection every year for the rest of my life.

Yves went nautical with anchors and all (kinda cliche?), but served up an awesome dose of 50's flare. Rachel Zoe knocked it out of the bananas bunch with her assortment of glamorous revival pieces. Chanel was very "black and white," yet once again showcased ethereal frocks for princesses at heart.

And, even though I love him as a man, I don't relate well to Michael Kors as a designer. His looks often border on "Safari Barbie." However, this year, his resort wear appeared young and hip, welcoming neons into the picture. OK, OK, it's a little Bond meets Austin Powers, but you gotta love his chutzpah.

And why not, as he represents the epitome of fashion-forward Bucktown, Chicago and exudes what I love most about humid spring afternoons in the outskirts of the Windy City: casual, cool, cutoff bliss.

This weekend, my husband and I are getting our sea legs (literally). Arrrgh!!!

I can't remember the last time I set sail, but I do remember how much I love the feeling of total isolation and sunshine...and the smell of saltwater and fresh air. Only problem is I have absolutely no idea what to wear. Here's a guess. Let me know if I'm close.

P.S. a one-piece paired with jeans is my new thing, as it's more appropriate than a bikini since we'll be among my husband's work colleagues. This is no spring break trip.

It's funny because a lot of fashion editors insist the decade's hold over fashion is on its way out; I highly disagree. Case in point: this new obsession with friendship bracelets. Everything from braided neon finds to semi-precious leather and twine creations are quickly becoming the number one accessory to "stack" with.

Here's the Korean beauty on the cover of KoreAm magazine in waves galore, sipping away in staples from my new favorite up-and-coming Los Angeles designer, Katie May, wearing a Shauna Metallic Bustier and Sofia Shorts. She looks like a very chic version of "Exotic" Barbie, which I adore.

Zeng Toi's Coconut Creme Caramel from Food & Wine

We all have needs; I look forward to fulfilling mine (don't get dirty, guys) during the weekend because gosh darn the week is just so busy.

As I've mentioned to you before, I have various writing jobs, two dogs, and a husband, so therefore Monday thru Friday is pretty much a race to get things done. Therefore, I'd like to start a new tradition on I'm Starving, where I'm going to pick out some food and clothing items I'll look forward to trying and wearing Friday-Sunday. Basically, it will consist of a list of guilty pleasures on a budget (sometimes not) that will make my weekends both productive and satisfying.

Friday Night
A delicious childhood favorite turned amazing, the look of these new Milano cookies reminds me of living in Florence, spending hours with roommates talking, sipping wine, and dunking shortbread cookies in Nutella. "Florence 15," so what?

This month, InStyle says you should look cute (not embarrassed) for your trip to the juice bar post-workout. I'm in need of some new workout gear and am probably the only one who prefers Nike to Lulu, so I'll be on the hunt.

Saturday Evening
A good friend is turning 30 and celebrating with a house party. I'll bring two bottles of wine since the stuff is probably gonna flow like Sparkletts.

For a French, Cotes Du Rhone style wine with an unbelievable price tag, try Rabbit Ridge (left), which can be found at Trader Joe's. Labeled an Allure de Robles, the blend hints at rich berries and black pepper.

If you want a bubbly, La Marca is hands down my new favorite Prosecco; it's crisp, not too sweet, and leaves a honey aftertaste on the tongue.

Sunday Evening
Trying out a new dessert recipe this Passover was a nightmare, but I intend to perfect it for my parents' enjoyment. Every Sunday we see them for dinner, so I intend on serving them the best Creme Caramel of their lives.

Zeng Toi's Coconut Creme Caramel (pictured at top of post)

INGREDIENTS

1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
10 large egg yolks
3/4 cup light brown sugar
2 cups heavy cream
One 13-ounce can unsweetened coconut milk
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut, toasted

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°. In a saucepan, cook the granulated sugar with the water over moderate heat, brushing down the sides of the pan with a wet brush, until a rich amber caramel forms, about 15 minutes. Quickly pour the caramel into a 9-inch square glass or ceramic baking dish to coat the bottom.
In a bowl, beat the egg yolks and brown sugar until very thick, 2 minutes. Beat in the cream, coconut milk, vanilla and salt and pour into the baking dish. Set the dish in a roasting pan. Pour hot water in the pan to come halfway up the dish's side. Bake for 1 hour, until the custard is just set but still jiggly in the center. Refrigerate in the dish overnight.
Run a knife around the edge of the custard. Set the dish in a pan of hot water for 10 seconds. Invert a flat platter over the dish then turn the custard and caramel onto the platter. Top with the toasted coconut and serve.

As a long week ended last Friday, my girlfriends and I reenacted a favorite activity from our childhood, the sleepover. Dressed in pajamas and up to our elbows in cookie dough, us late twenty-somethings transgressed for a night and picked a flick that would really get us in the mood. My Father the Hero was the unanimous choice, "the" chick flick of '94.

Oohing and awing over Katherine Heigl's angelic teenage face and slender bod, we began to remember just how incredible her wardrobe was. Funny thing is most of her outfits are back in style. Floral skirts and shorts paired with cotton t's and tanks are in hot pursuit, so with that said, I think it's time for another outfit post. P.S. that Ben guy is hot, hot, hot...even if he does have an earring.

No, I'm not about to provide you with a recipe for a microwave burrito (Encino Man) or reminisce about how cute the Olsen sisters were. What I am about to do is supply you with instructions for the fiercest, easiest, most delicious, cunning, laudable dinnertime dish ever: the Sloppy Joe.

Last weekend, I got my hands on a pretty tasty "slider" version at The Six. A little bit more gourmet than any childhood version, these two-biters were made with turkey instead of beef and had fried pickles to add a little crunch and saltiness. Nonetheless, they served as inspiration to create my own version for your noshing pleasure. Trust me, they're delish. The secret: lots of ketchup and moist turkey (no extra lean &*^^%#@)!

The following recipe is adapted from one I followed as a kid. Let's get down and dirty and next time we'll "Wheeze the Juice."

Valerie's Healthier Sloppy Joe's
4 Potato Hamburger Buns
3 Scallions
1 lb. Ground Turkey
1/4 cup Ketchup
1 tsp. Garlic Powder

Finely chop green onions. Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add ground turkey and onions, chopping up the meat with a wooden spoon. Fry until brown and then add ketchup and garlic powder. Stir and simmer for only a few more minutes. Heat your buns and Voila! you're done.

If you're up for it serve with my oven-baked fries.

Between taking on various writing gigs, living with two dogs and a hard-working husband who all love my home-cooked meals, and balancing plans with an extremely diverse group of girlfriends, I'm in need of trip out to...by now, you know where.

Not only do I love breathing in casino oxygen that smells of "Reds" and cheap perfume, becoming one with the rowdy 3 p.m. pool scene, and gawking at bachelorette mishaps, I love planning each and every one of my outfits well in advance. That way I can spend time on more important things, like acting as the in-room DJ, becoming the resident mixologist for a prompt 7 p.m. pre-cocktail cocktail hour, and curling everyone's hair. Yes, I'm the Vegas Jack of all trades.

Here's what I'm thinking...

Alexandra Jacobs (formerly of The New York Observer), an established features writer with a straight-forward, intriguing voice, recently composed an up close and personal piece for The New Yorker on a female entrepreneur I admittedly knew zilch about.

Before I read Smooth Moves: How Sara Blakely rehabilitated the girdle, Spanx symbolized a celebrified mega-brand, one I winced at every time I heard someone recite its magical power to slim. "I don't ever want to need that stuff," I told myself on a regular basis. But after reading about founder Sara Blakely's relatable train of thought, her short but powerful "Don't be afraid to fail!" motto, and her dog (a poodle named after Yves Saint Laurent's muse, Loulou de la Falaise), I caught a glimpse of a woman I wouldn't mind ending up like.

While winding through Blakely's many accomplishments, family relationships, trials, and current endeavors, Jacobs creates a role model for us readers who are desperately trying to make something of ourselves in a cold world overrun with technology and clichéd ambitions.

Have a look at what the Spanx Atlanta headquarters look like, below, and you'll understand what Blakely lives for. "I sat in gray cubicles long enough," Jacobs recounts Blakely saying during their visit.

If you haven't guessed yet, only 13 out of the 105 employees at the offices are male. The design is saucy and reminiscent of a boudoir--it looks like Jonathan Adler had a twin sister and she went to town. But, no...it was Bradley Hughes.

Sienna Miller and sister Savannah Miller's fashion label, twenty8twelve, just released its spring 2011 lookbook, unveiling a highly desirable (and highly wearable) slew of feminine-turned-edgy garments.

With Sienna as one of two models in the new presentation, you can only imagine how fast and well the new collection will sell. Her complexion: softly sun-washed; her figure: perfectly petite; and her beauty: unfathomable. The clothes, just like her, have that same "girl next door" appeal with a just a touch of rebellion.

West Coast is the Best Coast

Happy Friday to all you phat cats! When I came across this photo of model Hilary Rhoda on What Goes On, one of my new favorite fashion blogs, I just had to share. I also had to brag that "this" California girl can have In-N-Out any time she wants (due to the fact that it's right down the street from her abode).

Yes, I'm sticking my tongue out at all you East Coasters and Mid Westerners, who think you've really got it all. Well, you don't have "Animal Style" now, do you? But that's OK. Wipe your tears (and your saliva) because I'd like to share a recipe I came across long ago for a D.I.Y. Double-Double, Animal Style. Try it this weekend when your barbecuing, or if its too cold outside, save it for the warm weather.

MAKES TWO (2) 1/4-POUND BURGERS

1/2 pound fresh beef chuck with plenty of fat, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 teaspoons vegetable oil, divided
1 large onion, finely chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
Kosher salt
2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons mayonnaise
1 tablespoon ketchup
2 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
2 soft Hamburger buns, preferably Arnold brand
Freshly ground black pepper
8 dill pickles chips
2 quarter-inch-thick slices ripe tomato
2 leaves fresh iceberg lettuce, white core section removed, torn to bun-sized pieces
1/4 cup yellow mustard
4 slices deli-cut American Cheese

PROCEDURES

If using a meat grinder: Place feed shaft, blade, and 1/4-inch die of meat grinder in freezer until well-chilled. Meanwhile, place meat chunks on rimmed baking sheet, leaving space between each piece and place in freezer for 10 minutes until meat is firm.

Combine meat in large bowl and toss to combine. Grind meat and refrigerate immediately until ready for use. Handle as gently as possible. Proceed with step three below.

If using a food processor: Place bowl and blade of food processor in freezer until well-chilled. Meanwhile, place meat chunks on rimmed baking sheet, leaving space between each piece, and place in freezer for 10 minutes until meat is firm, but not frozen.

Combine meat in large bowl and toss to combine. Working in two batches, place meat cubes in food processor and pulse until medium-fine grind is achieved, about 8 to 10 one-second pulses, scraping down processor bowl as necessary. Refrigerate ground meat immediately until ready for use. Handle as gently as possible.

Preheat the oven or toaster oven to 400 degrees while you cook the onions: Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a 10-inch non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add onions and 1/2 teaspoon salt to skillet. Reduce heat to medium low, and cook, tossing and stirring occasionally until onions are well browned, about 15 minutes. Once onions begin to sizzle heavily and appear dry, add 1 tablespoon water to skillet and stir. Continue cooking until water evaporates and onions start sizzling again. Repeat process, adding 1 tablespoon of water with each iteration until onions are meltingly soft and dark brown, about 3 times total. Transfer to a small bowl and set aside.

Make the sauce: Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, sugar, and vinegar in small bowl. Stir to combine.

Place closed buns in preheated oven for 2 minutes until slightly darkened and crisped. Heat 1/2 teaspoon oil in 12-inch non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until shimmering. Open buns and add face-down to skillet. Toast until dark brown around the edges, about 1 minute total.

Form ground beef into four 2-ounce patties, using damp hands to press each into a patty about 3/16ths of an inch thick and 4 inches wide. Season generously with salt and pepper. Add remaining 1/2 teaspoon oil to pan, swirl to coat, and heat over medium-high heat until lightly smoking. Add burger patties and cook without moving until well browned and crusty on first side, about 2 1/2 minutes. While they are cooking, spread 1 tablespoon mustard on raw side of each patty with a spoon. Meanwhile, top each bottom bun with up half of spread, 4 slices pickles, 1 slice tomato, and lettuce. Flip patties with a thin spatula so mustard side is down and continue to cook for 1 minute. Top each patty with a slice of cheese. Divide onion mixture evenly between two patties. Place the other two patties directly on top of the onions , sandwiching them between the beef. Transfer patty stacks to bottom bun. Top with top bun, and serve immediately.

Grocery Store Bliss: New Belvedere Bloody Mary

I don't know about you, but sometimes my friends and I find as much solace in grocery shopping as we do in shoe shopping. Maybe it's the fact that I'm on the brink of 30 and turning into a pantry whore? Maybe it's because I simply love food as much as I love fashion? Or, maybe it's because wine and spirits always make it onto my list?

There's something about bringing home a new addition to the liquor cabinet--say a pricey but delicious whiskey to slake that midnight Manhattan craving. But there is always a chance of bringing home a spirit so fine that it can become dangerously intoxicating, especially if concocted with the right ingredients.

Enter Belvedere Bloody Mary. The new flavored vodka is sealed with a hint of those authentic, classic horseradish/tomato/peppery flavors. This month Nylon chose the bottle for its "Drink of the Month" and included a recipe, which looks like a must-try for spring!

Spring's awakening has me pining for some outdoor picnics and a little B-B-Q. Therefore, I'd like to share some finds in the way of clothing, accessories, and pantry staples (including my favorite supermarket barbecue sauce I've been eating since I knew what a sparerib was) that get me all riled up and ready for some pie eating, ring tossing, and hickory smoked fun. Enjoy!

What am I? A prisoner of my own youth? A person who likes to wear musky patchouli perfume because it reminds her of her best friend growing up and the hours they spent together, reading fashion magazines while listening to Portishead and wearing flannel on a lazy Saturday afternoon? I don't know what or who I am really...I just know that something begins to flutters inside when I see a barrette in someone's hair or watch the Craft on a cold night before falling asleep.

As one of my best friends and I meandered through the H&M store in quaint Georgetown this past weekend, she succinctly asked, "Valerie, what are these silk pajama pants all about?" I smiled and said, "well, according to The Man Repeller, innerwear worn as outerwear is so hot right now." She just smiled and continued to browse. I smiled too, as the pants, which are slightly less baggy than bedtime flannels, appealed to me the moment I met them. I love when fashion is comfortable.

We had this conversation after two hours of sleep on a red eye from the West Coast and a triple latte from Dean & Deluca, so it's a miracle I remember the words that made me feel so expert-like. Every new, far-fetched trend deserves to "have a moment." Therefore, I am bestowing pajama pants (or as designer Karen Walker calls them, boat pants) with their moment.

Here's a visual explanation of how to wear them. Guys, pay attention, too; pajama pants are the best way to express your mack daddy/Hugh Hefner side.

If you haven't peeked at my Haute Living blog contributions yet, I'd like to introduce you to my exclusive interview piece with Tim Campbell, an iconic, Los Angeles-based designer/architectural preservationist.

Responsible for the exterior revamp of Vidal Sassoon's Richard Neutra Singleton House and Diane Keaton's breathtaking Beverly Hills Spanish compound (pictured below), Campbell prides himself on bringing the city's most renowned properties back to life--in an organic manner, that is. Instead of tearing homes down and transforming them into unrecognizable, spineless mansions, he lightly sedates them, bringing back their original beauty with natural, up-to-date touches.

According to Campbell, The City of Angels acts as the most conducive environment for his work: "There's an ethereal quality to Los Angeles that I've not felt in other cities. For me, it's the proximity of the urban environment to the inherent inhospitable nature of the desert, coupled with the unbridled determination to transform our desert environment into a livable place."

Even though Keaton's home is my all-time favorite, I do enjoy peering inside his Silver Lake home (also pictured below), as it reflects that warm, California-cool, modern approach so many are trying to take right now. I know I am; I bought antlers off of Etsy last month. My husband thinks I'm crazy. I think I'm chic.

On the Runway...

Nope, sorry kids, haven't made it there yet--I'm referring to the LAX runway. As I've stated before, I do hope to make it to an actual runway one of these days (to report from, not to model on for any of you out there who think I'm borderline delusional).

I'm in fact headed out to the East Coast tonight and because it's only a quick trip to celebrate a friend's wedding, my husband and I are traveling light, meaning: carry-ons only! I'm not even toying with the notion of losing my luggage; I've spent countless hours of outfit planning.

Therefore, I'm announcing my staple beauty and clothing products; ones that fit very well into a teeny-tiny suitcase. Included in the whittled-down list: my Fiorentini and Baker biker boots (I never travel without them), Chanel's 'Blue Satin' nail polish because I just didn't have the time, a paperback version of Water for Elephants because the movie's coming out real soon and R.P. is starring in it...duh, and Paige Premium Denim's Glam Rock Jean Leggings, which fit like BUTTAH.

OK, I'm sorry, but does anyone see a resemblance between Cindy Mancini's white fringe cocktail get-up above and the Isabel Marant fall 2011 looks below? Totally fringe, totally 80's, and totally chic (not geek).

For any of you a bit lost right about now, I'm referring to the 1987 romantic comedy, Can't Buy Me Love, starring McDreamy as Ronald Miller--a relentless high school puppy dog lusting after the star cheerleader. The film's tagline, "He went from totally geek to totally chic," is almost as amazing as the Southwestern-inspired outfits seen throughout the film...notice the belt to the left.

Nobody leaves without singin' the blues...

If you recall, the aforementioned line comes from one of the very best childhood comedy-thrillers of all time, Adventures in Baby Sitting. I just had to slip it in because today's post is all about the blues...well, not precisely.

It's about a new craze over this amazing hue of electric blue, which has been spotted on many a fall 2011 runway. Whatever the shade is called and though it varies slightly, it's hot, hot, hot!

And today, I'm also being super duper kind because the bag I'm leading with is a recent purchase of mine, a German, imported jewel plucked from way down deep in the treasure chest, which not many people know about yet. So, let's try and keep it under wraps, eh? I just bought it in black for everyday use, but am seriously considering going back for it in blue too.

The satchel looks like Mulberry and Hermès copulated in a cheap one-night stand. "Cheap?" you ask. Ready for this: it's $279 at Nordstrom.

I'm a city girl through and through, but sometimes I (and many of us) yearn for the remoteness of the country. Well, here we go...

Widely-known photographer Tim Street-Porter and his wife, designer/author, Annie Kelly, have channeled their mutual adoration for their cozy, antique-laden Connecticut home into yet another a book. The two collaborate quite often, feeding the design world delicious doses of inspiration. But this time, it's all about quaint, isolated dwellings with rich histories that only the surrounding woods have survived long enough to witness.

An architectural keepsake salvaged from 1740, the home (pictured below)--along with many others nearby--is featured in Litchfield Style: Classic Country Houses of Conneticut, which hits shelves this April. The highly-anticipated Rizzoli work showcases a well-captured collage of relaxation, rusticity, and good old American charm, focusing on quarters and gardens that remind us just how captivating certain parts of New England still are.

Sorry, I couldn't resist! I love Jem and I love Dolce & Gabbana's Fall RTW 2011 collection. Some may turn their noses up at its bountiful use of stars, the color black, and female tuxedos, but I adore and appreciate the playful wearability.

And come on, giant star earrings dangling from the lobes...such a clever way of transporting us back to the glamorous 80's, a fashion era criticized way too often for its heinous contributions. I mean, open your eyes, take a look and think back to the days; when ruffles were actually appreciated, colorful, fist-size gems were worn just as carefree as Hermes scarves are today, and fashionable androgyny was making its debut.

Since I can remember I've been enamored with supermodels! I knew how to pronounce Laetitia Casta's name before Laetitia Casta did, back in the mid-90's when I was...uh, of the sprightly age of like 12. I know, it's a little freaky; OK, a lot freaky, but I was destined for a career related to fashion.

My adoration for the glamorous life, trials, tribulations, rituals, successes, and downfalls of models has not faded. However, I do have to say, no group of Botticellis will ever compare to the "rat pack" (if you will): Naomi, Linda, Cindy, and Niki. Heidi, you're amazing and Kate, you too, but let's be honest--maybe it was the way high-waisted, tapered jeans hung on the hips or full eyebrows framed the face...

So let's honor the past, appreciate the present, and ogle a little bit over the beauties in this world with a few photos from the Chive, a great resource for wasting time and drowning sorrows in the ever-so-addictive world of gossip. The Website is kind of like smoking; if you haven't started, that's a good thing.

And...because I love you all so much, I went a step further and listed a recipe below for Orange Mocha Frappuccinos! If you're not laughing, go rent Zoolander.

Orange Mocha Frappuccinos

Serves 2

3 oz. hot espresso

1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 cups milk
1 Tbls. dry pectin
1 cup ice cubes
1 pinch cocoa powder
2 Tbls orange chocolate chips

Stir sugar into espresso; cool mixture.

Stir milk and pectin into espresso mixture until pectin is dissolved.
Fill a glass with ice and either serve mixture over ice, or pour glass contents into blender and frappe for 30-45 seconds.

K, kids...I'm starving for some Mediterranean food (and a trip out that way too), so I figured this was an opportune time to present you with an incredibly creative and tantalizing recipe for Couscous, enhanced with exotic spices and both sweet and savory ingredients. Inventive and simple, this fluffy, healthy, hearty side dish can be paired with any protein--from salmon to chicken--so get your spices out, chop up some veggies, and away we go!

Thanks to Cece Baker Cook, my new cooking instructor and longtime friend--who took me and many other young professionals under her wing last weekend during one of her classes--my recipe book has grown and blossomed into a mature bible of lunch and dinner staples. She makes the kitchen seem so welcoming and suggests some ingenious tools*, to boot, that Food & Wine (bless its little gourmet heart) neglected to share with me. It was tool time in there, as Cece pulled out everything from a lettuce dryer bag to a pink pair of onion goggles!

Couscous with Curry, Currants, and Cinnamon
Serves 8
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
1 cup warm water (for currants)
2/3 cup dried currants
2 cups couscous
1 1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup minced parsley
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/2 cup diced green onions
1/3 cup slivered red onions
1/2 cup grated carrots
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. freshly ground pepper
1 tsp. course salt
1 tsp. curry powder

1. Place the currants in warm water to plump; about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

2. Bring chicken broth to a boil and stir in couscous. Cover and remove from heat; let stand for five minutes or until all the liquid has been soaked up. Transfer to a large bowl, adding all vegetables; toss gently.

3. In a small bowl, whisk oil, salt, pepper, cinnamon, and curry powder. Then drizzle over couscous until incorporated.

4. May be refrigerated before serving.

I have a hard time purchasing jewelry. Some of it looks too cheap and dispensable, and other pieces are priced beyond what I would ever spend.

OK, OK, so the truth comes out; I would rather splurge on shoes because shoes are never too expensive. But honestly, I'm fine with getting jewelry as gifts--my collection mainly consists of keepsakes and of course my wedding diamonds.

I probably struggle because I don't practice "frosting" myself that often. However, this whole 70's craze, involving large crystals and rare rocks has got me going...and swooning over one designer in particular, which my favorite Australian blogger, Opinion Slave, introduced me to.

Her fellow Aussie jewelry designer friend goes by Chase.Dakota and she sells her handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces on Etsy for very reasonable prices. She adds new jagged creations to her marketplace every day so be sure to stay au curant, but don't go too crazy and save some for me.

Walking in a Spider Web: Ashish at LFW

What Gwen once said so eloquently: "Sorry I'm not home right now, I'm walking in a spider web, so leave a message and I'll call you back," Indian-born, Brit designer Ashish Gupta reinterprets with his fall/winter 2011 collection for London Fashion Week.

Spider web knee decals, plaid mini skirts, 90's off-the-shoulder sweaters, and of course his trademark sequins, glided down the runway on models with uncombed hair and lip rings. He lets the clothes speak for themselves, and boy do they talk to me; they say: "buy me, love me, take me home, and grow some additional fashion 'balls.'"

It's all so hard to resist, as I can see Clueless being remade with an inverted plot--a preppy girl joins a grungy, punk rock clique from the other side of the tracks, but maintains some of her original fashion roots.

Think about that while my obsession for the labels grows even stronger.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Pati Dubroff: The Woman Behind the Face of Kate Bosworth

Wanna look like Kate Bosworth? Here's your chance.

Do everything Pati Dubroff says because she's Bosworth's main makeup artist. She's also Clarins' new beauty ambassador. I learned both of these important facts last week during a special brunch I attended at the Sunset Tower Hotel, hosted by none other than Dubroff.

Actually getting to pick her brain for a few intimate moments as we sat next to each other, nibbling on chocolate croissants and sipping lattes, I asked Dubroff how she achieved Kate's perfect, punch-colored lip as seen below. She replied by explaining that she coated her lips in a neutral shade then dabbed the centers (only the centers) with a darker, bolder shade and then worked her way outward. "Genius," I thought to myself. Aloud, I contained myself and politely said, "how clever."

But, the product that captured my heart and my developing fine lines was the brand's Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch. Unlike most primers out there, the magical product smooths lines, pores, and wrinkles sans the chemicals. Allowing foundation to go on like satin, it dissolves right into the skin, leaving it light, as if nothing went on at all. P.S. it comes in a wand too for touch-ups on the go. GENIUSSSSS!

Ralph Lauren's fall 2011 collection, which recently debuted at NYFW, satiated one of my biggest fashion cravings: the female tuxedo. However, instead of traditional tapered slacks and a-line jackets, the collection showcased silk palazzos and harem trousers, and exquisite velvet and fur boleros.

Carrie Bradshaw walked down the aisle in one in SATC 2 (one of the only good things to come out of the disappointing yet fashionable film), evolving into the perfect groomsmaid for Stanny's wedding. Alexa Chung often pulls off the look with unorthodox white blouses and atypical bow ties. Rihanna has also tried it out; her look incorporated the 80's by adding puffed shoulders and shiny taffeta.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue: Not Just for Men

Something you may know: Sports Illustrated announced its 2011 Swimsuit Issue cover girl and roster of models yesterday. Something you may not know: I love to look at it.

Before jumping to any conclusions, let me explain. Instead of jealousy running through my veins, it's awe. A gander at the pages provides me motivation to visit the gym. Second, it makes me want to travel.

If you glance deeper into the annual ode to hot bods, designer swimwear, and strikingly beautiful faces, you'll see a portfolio of travel spots you may have not known about before reading the issue. Sure they're paired with half-naked women, but at least you're learning something.

This year, Brooklyn and many of the other models are whisked away to Hawaii and the Philippines, outfitted in simple suits with cat eyes and gold jewelry. Peruvian first timer/Olympic javelin thrower Leryn Franco poses against a glossy lake in Canada; her ability to don dog tags with a bikini fills me with a craving for an Indian summer camping trip, so I can stomp about in Ugs and one of those 70's knitted two-piecers.

An Education: What I've Learned by Not Being Invited to NY Fashion Week

In a valiant effort to dissolve any bitter emotions I have inside of me (that just sit there and stew every time I get an alert about a new show) as a result of not being at NYFW, I am trying to look at my web browsing as educational. Therefore, I'd like to list what I've learned so far from my internet searching and perusing:

1. According to an interview on Into the Gloss, using powder on your brows--instead of liner--will help achieve this sophisticated, minimalistic rocker look seen at Alexander Wang.

A Sweet Weekend

I had a sweet weekend! I'm not using the word "sweet" to imply I had an awesome couple days off; I'm using it to inform you that I indulged.

My first dessert fest occurred somewhere around Midnight as I dove into old-fashioned, Southern delicacies, courtesy of Porch Pies, at a glammed up work party my husband and I attended. Standing by the dessert table for about twenty minutes probably wasn't the best party etiquette, but I couldn't resist the pecan pie or the buttermilk pie, family heirloom recipes passed down to owner/founder Robyn Poarch. Best part is, the company bakes all pies to order and then hand delivers them to your front door. Right now, this only applies to the LA area, but I'm sure an expansion is somewhere in the future.

The next afternoon, I attended another soiree--this time it was girls only. The Valentine's gathering, thrown by Samantha Scott, offered Red Velvet Cake Pops, which appeared so perfect I though they were store bought. But, the moment Samantha said she made them herself, the diving commenced once again, and I went forth and sinned for the second time in 24 hours. It was worth it. Peace & Love, and a veggie burger

According to Booth Moore of the Los Angeles Times, "fall is all about spiritual transcendence, 1970s style." Readily apparent in Mara Hoffman's collection, which just debuted--presentation style--in New York, the theme took shape in the form of long, wispy dresses; most with hoods attached.

Fit for the adventurous (and fashionable) female traveler, Hoffman's dresses pay tribute to Peruvian culture and quite frankly, Joni Mitchell's carefree essence. Hey, any excuse to eat tempeh and roll around in the grass in braids and a "man repelling" (I just love her) caftan is good enough for me.

With that said, I have a wonderful, easy recipe for a delicious, D.I.Y. veggie burger. Don't be frightened; it's a cinch and packed with fiber. I found it on Epicurious and dazzled my husband with it. He didn't know I could make something so healthy into something so good. Really, the rich, almost meat-like flavor comes from the Portobellos, but I'll keep that to myself.

Bean & 'Bello burger

(Slightly adapted from the original recipe published in Self magazine and on Epicurious.com)

4 tablespoons canola oil

2 medium portobellos, diced

1/2 red onion, diced

1 can (15 ounce) black beans, drained and rinsed

1/4 teaspoon paprika

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 egg whites

1 tablespoon honey mustard

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

6 tablespoons dried breadcrumbs

4 whole wheat bread or wheat buns

1/2 cup barbecue sauce

Low-fat Monterey Jack cheese

4 tomato slices

Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms and onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, about 4 to 5 minutes.

Add beans, paprika, garlic powder and black pepper. Cook, smashing beans with the back of a spoon, 1 to 2 minutes more.

Transfer mixture to a bowl and mix in eggs, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and breadcrumbs. Form into 4 patties.

Wipe out skillet; heat remaining 2 tablespoons oil over medium heat and cook burgers until brown and feels firm, 6 to 7 minutes each side. After the first flip, place a thin slice of cheese on each patty.

Place on toasted bread/buns; top with barbecue sauce and tomato. If you want, you can add lettuce too.

Until I'm assigned a seat underneath the tents, I'll have take the information that continues to sputter across the Web and turn it into real entertainment for both you and I to witness and think about.

Here's what has tickled me so far. I do love BCBG Max Azria's collection; it's wearable and comfortable without being fussy or grungy. Feminine without being overly girly--refined without any real embellishments. The dresses are definitely day-to-night must haves. P.S. I love the Diane Keaton turtleneck thing happening...so very mod-tastic.

Nicholas K. was a bit too homeless person for me, but I do like what happened at Vena Cava. Not all of the looks were presented well; many of the models resembled French "street walkers," but the high-waisted sailor slacks and Navajo-patterned pieces caught my eye, whether I wanted them too or not.

Rodarte for Opening Ceremony is Born

Opening Ceremony has started selling its Rodarte* capsule collection in stores and online. Girls and Guys, pick a piece to splurge on because you and I both know it's like a buying a limited edition, timeless work of art.

What will you be able to choose from? So much, as the collection is massive and full of punchy florals (yes, for boys too), draped dresses and skirts, Mojave sweaters, satchels, shoes, sunglasses....amazing, 80's-style wayfarer glasses, and more. The eeriness usually present in so many of the label's pieces seems to be missing but that's OK because it looks as though there's much more of a happy, hip, retro high school theme taking place. I mean, letterman jackets, I DIE!!!!

*What you may not know about Rodarte: Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the label's young co-founders, created all of the costumes for Black Swan, playing on their genius to layer alternating textures and patterns. I for one feel that the resurgence in feathers is primarily due to the duo's incredibly chic looking tutus in the film.

Behold, the Eyes of Barneys New York

You know the phrase, "eyes are the windows to the soul." We'll our favorite department store, Barneys, just launched "The Window," an up close and personal, witty Website designed to let us all into the soul of the shopping mecca's glamorous, chic, and cutting-edge universe.

It's an intimate way to get acquainted with the season's new Louboutins and a device for peering into the mind of, wait for it, Simon Doonan. I already feel a stronger connection to overpriced couture mecca o' wonder, which is now even more of a happy thought for me. If Peter Pan were a true story, I would definitely being flying now.

In the form of worship, here are Simon's reflections on Lanvin's eponymous genius, Alber Elbaz:

Alber Elbaz is not just the genius designer for Maison Lanvin, he is also a part of the Barneys family. We go way back. We love him because he designs the chic-est, most wantable clothes and accessories on the planet — but there is something else. We dig him because he is a great person.

He is, in fact, a total MENSCH.

(For those of you who don’t know what “mensch” means, here’s some help:

Mensch [men-ch]: a decent, upright, mature, and responsible person.)

… is for Magic. Alber’s personal journey via Morocco, Israel, NYC and now Paris, gives his designs eclectic electricity. He has the multi-culti magic of Yves, as in Saint Laurent.

… is for Exuberance. A typical Lanvin show juxtaposes moments of somber drama with bursts of colorful joie de vivre. Isn’t that what life is all about?

… is for Noir. Nobody does black like Alber. He gets the nuances of noir, and the subtle naughtiness of noir.

… is for Self-deprecation. After his last show Alber told WWD, “I’m not a cool designer, and Lanvin is not a cool brand.” ( By which he meant, Lanvin is not relentlessly trendy and insider-ish. ) He’s right: Lanvin is not a “cool” brand. It’s a timeless brand.

… is for Chandeliers. Alber loves them. In 2004 we restaged Alber’s Paris Fall show in our Beverly Hills store. When Alber arrived and saw the runway, he felt we needed more chandeliers. We ransacked the movie studio prop-rental houses to get him what he wanted. We were so anxious to please Alber that we seriously contemplated stealing some chandeliers from Candy Spelling’s Bel Air living room.

… is for Humor. Alber is rigorous about his seams and his designs, but knows when to turn up the laugh track: Check out his playful Frenchy foofy window displays, to mention nothing of his drag-queen-filled NYC Halloween party last year.

Vive Alber! Vive le Mensch!

Easy Fried Noodles Thanks to Saveur

I don't know about you, but I suck at making Chinese food! My stir-fries come out bland and I fail to achieve the authentic flavors Northern China is known for. I've polished my culinary skills for many other parts of the world--mastering the art of the gourmet hamburger and ensuring my pasta dishes come out al dente and balanced--but this region in particular has me thrown.

Thankfully, I stumbled upon Saveur's step-by-step recipe for pan-fried noodles (Tian Tian Chao Mian), which serves as an idiot proof tutorial on how to create the savory staple.

My bible for distinct recipes and unique editorial, Saveur is simply one of the best food magazines out there. Thanks again, James Oseland; you amazing man, you!

Recipe: Serves 2-4

1/2 small seedless cucumber, peeled and julienned

Kosher salt, to taste

3 tbsp. canola oil

1 medium carrot, julienned

1 onion, thinly sliced

1/4 lb. ground pork

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 1" piece ginger, minced

6 scallions, minced

1 1/2 tbsp. dark soy sauce

1 1/2 tbsp. rice cooking wine

1 1/2 tsp. sugar

2 cups bean sprouts

6 oz. dried flat noodles, boiled and rinsed under cold water

1 tbsp. Asian sesame oil

1. Toss cucumbers and a pinch of salt together in a small bowl; let sit 5 minutes. Heat a 14" wok (or stainless-steel skillet) over high heat until it begins to smoke. Add 1 tbsp. oil around edge of wok; swirl to coat bottom and sides. Add carrots and onions; cook until softened, about 1 minute. Transfer to a plate; set aside.

2. Return wok to high heat and add remaining oil. Add pork, garlic, ginger, and half the scallions; cook, breaking pork into small pieces, until browned, 3-4 minutes.

3. Add soy sauce, wine, sugar, bean sprouts, and carrots and onions. Cook, stirring, until hot, about 30 seconds.

4. Add cucumbers, remaining scallions, noodles, and sesame oil; cook, tossing, until hot, about 1 minute. Season with salt.

Prepping for spring involves coming up with new party ideas. It's just about February 1, so let's get crack-a-lacking.

Therefore, may I impart some wisdom? Pick a designer, choose a recipe, and get to work...you'll become a hostess with the mostess in no time, solidifying an A+ outfit and planning a carefully thought-out menu.

I definitely want to throw some sort of garden party, an English garden party, spiffied up with a novel, citrus theme. My good friend, party planner Samantha Scott, brought one her colorful affair's to life with fragrant orange, lime, and lemon centerpieces, topping it off with a touch of glamorous rusticity. Using burlap tablecloths and antique chalkboard menus, Scott created a warm, inviting atmosphere where guests sipped cocktails and lingered for hours.

I'm done hosting bridal showers for the time being so I'll have to come up with some other occasion. In the meantime, I'll be dreaming up ways to gather funds to buy an Erdem dress and baking away to perfect Westside Tavern's Warm Sticky Toffee Cake, a heavenly combination of carmel gooie-ness and dense cake.

As for Erdem; the british designer's spellbinding spring/summer collection paves the way for the print craze we're about to embark on. Floral patterns, lace, chiffon in modernistic silhouettes--thank you to the fashion gods from above!

Warm Sticky Toffee Cake
Recipe from Los Angeles Times
Total time: About 2 hours
Servings: 6 to 12
Note: Adapted from Westside Tavern

A. English toffee sauce
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon (1 ½ sticks plus 1 tablespoon) butter, cut into ½-inch cubes
1 1/2 cups dark brown sugar
3/4 cup maple syrup

In a large heavy-bottom saucepan, combine the cream, butter, brown sugar and maple syrup. Bring to a boil over high heat, whisking frequently. Once the mixture comes to a boil, remove from heat. Blend the mixture using an immersion blender until thickened and emulsified. Alternatively, the mixture can be blended in batches using a standard blender (be careful as the mixture is very hot). This makes 4 cups sauce.

B. Toffee cake and assembly
2 tablespoons (¼ stick) butter, plus extra for buttering the ramekins
Sugar for dusting the ramekins
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons boiling water
3/4 cup plus 2 ½ teaspoons (3.4 ounces) flour
Pinch salt
3/8 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup plus 1 ½ teaspoons dark brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
3/4 cup coarsely chopped dates
Hot prepared toffee sauce
Whipped mascarpone cream, cream or ice cream

1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease 6 (6-ounce) ramekins with butter, and dust with sugar. In a saucepan, whisk the baking soda into the boiling water.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and baking powder.
3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or in a large bowl using an electric mixer, beat the butter, brown sugar and vanilla until fully incorporated.
4. To the butter mixture, add the egg and beat until fully incorporated. Over low speed, slowly and gently add the dry ingredients, scraping the bowl to make sure the batter is fully mixed.
6. Over low speed, slowly stream the hot water into the batter. Add the dates and continue mixing over low speed until the batter thickens. This makes about 2 cups batter.
7. Divide the batter between the prepared ramekins. Bake until the cakes are a dark, caramel color, about 45 minutes.
8. Remove the ramekins and cool the cakes for 5 minutes, then invert the cakes onto a rack over a rimmed baking sheet. Pour the hot toffee sauce onto the cakes until they seem saturated (extra sauce will pool at the bottom, this can be gathered for additional glazing and serving), then glaze the cakes a second time with the sauce.
9. Set the cakes aside for about 30 minutes to set up and cool. The cakes can be made a few hours in advance and held on a baking sheet, loosely covered with plastic wrap, at room temperature.
10. To serve, cover each cake with one-fourth cup warm toffee sauce. Serve with a generousquenelle or dollop of mascarpone cream or whipped cream, or scoop of ice cream.

So I promise something food related will make it back to my blog A.S.A.P., but I just had to share the beautiful Diane Kruger's wardrobe from Paris Fashion Week (AKA "fash-land" as Grazia Daily puts it...love that term) with you all.

She is simply the most marvelous female, exuding class and valid style. Her delicate features make her look as if she is a porcelain doll dressed in couture. No wonder Karl loves her so much.

Chanel is her thing, but she certainly looks amazing in everything else she puts on, flawlessly pulling off all colors--everything from nude to black. She's another select fashion icon to add to my list.

Let's Go to the Chapel with Joan Harris

Ladies, wedding season is upon us and I know many of you, including myself, kickoff the marriage mayhem in February and March. As a guest, buying a gift is a cinch thanks to the all-mighty registry. But what about an outfit? This is the true challenge us girls are perpetually faced with.

Enter Joan Harris (if you're not already familiar, Joan is the strikingly beautiful and voluptuous character on "Mad Men"). Her impeccable, Parisian-influenced wardrobe has become inspiration to many designers, such as John Galliano, who wish to capture the 50' and 60's by utilizing full skirts, pin-up silhouettes, cloches, and colors other than black. We can thank Joan for brining fur and red lips back; two amazing additions one should never go to a black tie or black tie optional wedding without.

I don't know about you, but after watching several seasons of "Mad Men" and gawking at looks from Christian Dior's spring 2011 couture show, which is pictured above and below (soooo in love), I'm decking myself out in head-to-toe glamour. I'll be stowing the bandaged Herve Legers for Vegas, as it's all about becoming a classy lady when "going to the chapel."

Closet Voyeur

For all of you (I'm included in this) who get hot and bothered when bloggers get personal by snapping interior photos of their closets--which always seem to be overflowing with oodles of Hermes scarves, fist-size jewels and Louboutins galore--you're about to have a fashion murmur (I'm included in this too).

I do find this kind of entertainment a bit painful for people like myself who have to grow their closets slow and steady like a friggin Chia Pet but sooooo worth it.

While reading my daily NY Mag Fashion Alert newsletter, I read about a new Website that launched today, The Coveted. The site provides us readers with an uncanny look inside some very important people's closets. By important, I mean the untouchables who work in the world of fashion editorial, styling, and beyond, including Keith Pollock, Editorial Director of Elle.com New York and Mary Kate Stein Miller, Fashion Market Director for Teen Vogue.

Not only do we get a glimpse at the dreamy goods, we get an explanation of them, the history behind them and a description of the art pieces that get proudly displayed with them. After all, closets for "these" folks are like odes to their knack for style; function isn't the only purpose.

Curing the Moving Blues

So my lack of posting has been due to the fact that we are moving apartments this weekend. The task of packing up, cleaning out, and organizing three floors of stuff has taken a serious toll on my sanity; if I ever had any to begin with.

Sure, the new pad is just down the street, but bubble wrapping and trash bagging has become the bane of my existence. Once Saturday comes and goes, I'll be a brighter, better me. But until then, here's what's been fueling me.

A good bottle of red:

Even though I'm a self-declared wine snob, I admit a good bottle doesn't have to be expensive. It does however have to challenge my palate.

California blends have been fulfilling that requirement lately, and therefore I'd like to recommend Bogle's 2007 Phantom. An exceptional marriage of berries and black pepper, the Petite Syrah, Zinfandel and Mourvèdre balance is so pleasing and drinkable that I might be tempted to choose it as my hydration method on the big day.

Go Gadget Go!

80's cartoon legend Inspector Gadget seemed to be present on the runway during Milan Fashion Week. Several of the Fall 2011 menswear collections debuted with long coats, heavy caps and hearty knits hiding many a chizzled male model underneath.

The Missoni sisters seem to be all for the mysterious, detective trend, as they put they're men on display with long shaggy locks and facial hair galore; a look I'm not quite into but one that is rampant in the hipster marketplace. Emporio Armani played with ankle length trench coats--a trend I am into.

Gents: prepare to go undercover. You better start mastering the art of layering now. Good luck.

Rejoining The Real World

An island style vacation comes with a huge drawback. Upon returning home, you feel unlike yourself for a few days until reality, out of nowhere, grabs hold.

Without warning, you snap out of your tropical coma, suddenly remembering what road rage is. You bite into a piece of fruit, thinking it's going to be of the perfect texture and ripeness, but it's not. It's mushy and sour--not like the papayas you grazed on just days ago, which were firm and sweet.

I did the dishes in an out-of-body daze last night. And doing the laundry seems therapeutic. Something's severely wrong with me. I must have taken in way too much sun.

If there is anything that's going bring me back to reality it's these two reasons!
